LL Cool J Reflects on Hip-Hop’s Evolution and His New Album Ahead of Release

In a revealing interview with The Guardian, LL Cool J offered insights into his thoughts on hip-hop’s current state and his long-awaited new album, “The Force,” set to drop on September 6.

The iconic rapper and actor discussed how hip-hop has shifted from its origins as a voice for the underdog to a genre that some now view as elitist. “Hip-hop isn’t underdog music anymore. It’s become more of a pop genre,” he said. “It doesn’t have the same raw energy it did in the early days with acts like Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys. However, it’s important for artists to continue to address more than just the superficial trappings of success.”

LL Cool J also touched on his foray into acting, noting the similarities between performing in hip-hop and acting. “Both require building a persona and bringing a story to life,” he explained. Reflecting on his role in the film “Deep Blue Sea,” he recounted a harrowing moment with an animatronic shark, highlighting the dangers of early special effects. “One time, the shark almost drowned me,” he said, describing a scene where an animatronic shark malfunctioned and left him underwater until he managed to free himself.

On the subject of his musical influences, LL Cool J reminisced about his grandmother’s impact on his life and career. “She was a crucial figure in my life,” he said, remembering her as a guiding force who helped him navigate his path to success.

Regarding his new album, LL Cool J expressed a desire to push creative boundaries. Collaborating with Q-Tip as a producer, he aimed to blend various musical influences, including African music and synth-pop, to create a record that reflects both his personal evolution and a global perspective. “I wanted to move the needle and make something impactful, not just for my friends but for the world,” he stated.

The conversation also touched on his memorable performances and experiences, including his love for Abba’s “Dancing Queen” and his view on controversial past songs. LL Cool J maintained that while some of his earlier work might be interpreted differently today, he stands by his creative decisions.

As he prepares for the release of “The Force,” LL Cool J remains a dynamic figure in both music and film, blending his past experiences with a forward-looking approach to artistry.
