Skepta faces backlash over new single artwork inspired by Kanye West
Skepta has sparked controversy with the artwork for his new single “Gas Me Up (Diligent)”, which bears a striking resemblance to Kanye West’s infamous “Yeezus” cover.
The UK rapper, who is set to release his fifth studio album “Ignorance Is Bliss” later this month, shared the image on his Instagram account on Monday (January 8). The photo shows several bald heads from behind, with one of them sporting a “Gas Me Up” tattoo on their scalp.
The artwork immediately drew comparisons to West’s 2013 album “Yeezus”, which featured a similar concept of shaved heads with the word “Yeezus” written on them. However, while West’s cover was praised for its minimalist and provocative aesthetic, Skepta’s version was met with criticism and mockery from fans and fellow artists.
Some accused Skepta of copying West’s idea without adding any originality or creativity, while others questioned his choice of words and the meaning behind them. Some also pointed out the irony of Skepta naming his album “Ignorance Is Bliss” while seemingly being unaware of the backlash he would face for his artwork.
One of the most vocal critics was Stormzy, who took to Twitter to express his disappointment in Skepta. The “Big For Your Boots” rapper, who has collaborated with Skepta in the past, wrote: “Nah Skepta you’re better than this man. How you gonna rip off Kanye like that? You’re supposed to be a leader not a follower. This is embarrassing bro.”
Skepta has not responded to the negative reactions yet, but he did post a video of himself dancing to his new single on his Instagram story. He also thanked his fans for their support and said he was excited to share his new music with them.
“Gas Me Up (Diligent)” is the first single from Skepta’s upcoming album “Ignorance Is Bliss”, which is scheduled to drop on January 26. The album will feature guest appearances from J Hus, Wizkid, A$AP Rocky, and more. Skepta has described the album as “a celebration of life, love, and happiness”.
