Rap legend Snoop Dogg has revealed that he has a whole album with Harlem rapper Dave East that never saw the light of day because the label was not satisfied with it.
The revelation came during a conversation with Benny The Butcher on Snoop's YouTube series GGN, which dropped on Wednesday (January 24). The two rappers discussed their collaboration on Benny's latest album The Plugs I Met 2, produced by Harry Fraud, and how they connected through mutual respect and admiration.
Snoop then mentioned that he had a similar experience with Dave East, who he praised for his lyrical skills and authenticity. He said that they recorded an entire album together, but it was never released because the label did not approve of it.
"We did a whole album, me and Dave East. That shit hard as fuck. But the label killed it. They didn't want it to come out. They didn't think it was good enough," Snoop said.
He did not specify which label he was referring to, but it is likely that he meant Def Jam, which is Dave East's current label and also Snoop's former label. Snoop left Def Jam in 2009 after a dispute with then-president Jay-Z.
Snoop did not reveal any details about the album, such as the title, the release date, or the tracklist. He also did not say if he plans to release it in the future or if it will remain in the vault.
However, he expressed his frustration with the label's decision and said that he believes that the fans would appreciate the album.
"I'm like, 'Man, fuck that. The streets need that. That's what hip-hop is about. It's about two niggas from different coasts, different sides, coming together, making some music for the culture,'" Snoop said.
He added that he respects Dave East for his work ethic and his dedication to the craft of rap.
"He's one of those niggas that really care about this rap shit. He's not just doing it for the money or the fame. He's doing it because he loves it. He's passionate about it. And I love working with niggas like that," Snoop said.
