The rap veteran Trick Daddy has disputed Fat Joe's assertion that he was the one who discovered him and helped him get a record deal. In a recent interview with The Breakfast Club, Trick Daddy said that Fat Joe was "lying" and that he had already established himself in the Miami rap scene before Joe came along.
Trick Daddy, who is best known for his hit songs "Naan" and "I'm a Thug", said that he met Fat Joe through his mentor and fellow rapper Uncle Luke, who had signed him to his label Luke Records in the early 1990s. Trick Daddy said that he and Fat Joe became friends and collaborated on some songs, but that Joe had no role in his career advancement.
"He didn't discover me. He didn't get me signed. He didn't do none of that," Trick Daddy said. "He was just a friend of mine who I did music with."
Trick Daddy's statement contradicts what Fat Joe said in 2022, when he appeared on the podcast My Expert Opinion and claimed that he was the one who introduced Trick Daddy to the music industry. Joe said that he heard Trick Daddy's demo tape and was impressed by his talent and style. He said that he took Trick Daddy's tape to New York and played it for executives at Atlantic Records, who then offered him a deal.
"I took his shit and got him signed," Joe said. "I discovered Trick Daddy."
However, Trick Daddy's version of events is supported by Uncle Luke, who also spoke out against Fat Joe's claim last year. Uncle Luke, who is a pioneer of Miami bass music and a former leader of the controversial group 2 Live Crew, said that he was the one who discovered Trick Daddy and nurtured his career. He said that he gave Trick Daddy his stage name, his first album deal, and his first national exposure.
"I put Trick Daddy on the map," Uncle Luke said. "Fat Joe didn't do nothing for Trick Daddy."
Trick Daddy and Fat Joe have not publicly addressed their disagreement since their conflicting statements. Both rappers have been busy with their own projects and ventures. Trick Daddy recently released a new album called Thug Mentality 2024, and Fat Joe is preparing to launch a new podcast called The Fat Joe Show.
