Beyoncé’s dad, Mathew Knowles, has joined his son-in-law JAY-Z in criticizing the Grammy Awards for overlooking his daughter’s albums in the Album of the Year category.
JAY-Z, who won two Grammys on Sunday (February 4) for his album 4:44, used his acceptance speech to call out the Recording Academy for snubbing Beyoncé in the past. He said that despite being nominated nine times, Beyoncé has never won Album of the Year, and that the Grammys need to be more inclusive and representative of the diverse musical landscape.
Mathew Knowles, who was Beyoncé’s manager until 2011, echoed JAY-Z’s sentiments in an interview with TMZ on Monday. He said that he was proud of JAY-Z for speaking up, and that he agreed that Beyoncé deserved more recognition for her groundbreaking albums, such as Lemonade, which lost to Adele’s 25 in 2017.
He also said that the Grammys have a history of bias against black artists, especially in the major categories, and that they need to change their voting system and criteria to reflect the current music industry.
“I think the Grammys have a lot of work to do to become more relevant and more fair,” Mathew Knowles said. “Beyoncé is one of the most influential and talented artists of our generation, and she should be celebrated and honored accordingly.”
